Key Points Of Leaked Confidential Documents

11:22am UK, Monday November 29, 2010

WikiLeaks has released its largest set of confidential State Department documents published by a number of newspapers which had been given advance sight of the material.

WikiLeaks is steadily releasing more than 250,000 classified documents

Here are the main points:
IRAN:
Arab leaders have been privately urging the US to take military action against Iran in a bid to prevent it developing nuclear weapons.
The King of Bahrain apparently warned the US that: "The danger of letting it [the nuclear programme] go on is greater than the danger of stopping it".

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
President Ahmadinejad is considered dangerous

He is said to have been backed by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia who reportedly urged Washington to: "cut off the head of the snake" while there is still time.
A US assessment also claims Iran has obtained advanced missiles from North Korea that could enable it to strike Western European capitals and Moscow and develop long-range ballistic missiles.

SPYING ON THE UN:

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at Nato
Hillary Clinton has been implicated in alleged UN spying

In an apparent breach of the 1946 UN Convention which states that the "premises of the United Nations shall be inviolable", there are said to be instructions from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her predecessor Condoleezza Rice to spy on the organisation's leadership.
One directive requested IT security measures, passwords and personal encryption keys used by top UN officials and their staff.
Others instruct diplomats to obtain personal details of people they meet including frequent flyer numbers, credit card details, iris scans, fingerprints, and even DNA material.
WORLD LEADERS:

Vladimir Putin
Vladimir Putin is described as an 'Alpha Dog'

The cables also include "harsh" criticism by US embassy staff of their host governments and world leaders. Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin is described as an "alpha dog" and there are allegations that his government is linked to organised crime.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai is said to be "driven by paranoia" while German Chancellor Angela Merkel "avoids risks and is rarely creative".
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is compared to Hitler and there is a description of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi who is said to be accompanied everywhere by a "voluptuous blonde" Ukrainian nurse.

PAKISTAN:
Documents allegedly show US efforts to remove highly enriched uranium from a Pakistani research reactor amid fears it could be diverted for use in an illegal nuclear device.
KOREA:
Documents reportedly reveal discussions between America and South Korea about the prospects for a unified Korea, should the North's economic troubles and political transition lead the secretive Stalinist state to "implode".

CHINA:
The cables were also said to describe a global campaign of computer sabotage by China carried out by government operatives, private security experts and "internet outlaws" recruited by the Beijing government.

The South Korean military has announced it is to carry out new artillery drills from the island shelled by North Korea.

Joint military manoeuvres by South Korea and the US Navy are also getting under way in the waters near Yeonpyeong Island.
The united show of force is a response to the attack last week which killed four people, including two civilians.
Sky News China correspondent Holly Williams, in Beijing, said: "The US and South Korea say the military exercises are defence in nature, but in reality they are a show of force.
"These exercises are clearly meant as a reminder to the North that if push ever came to shove on the Korean peninsula, they would be massively outgunned.
"They are the biggest naval exercises ever held between South Korea and the US at 7,000 personnel involved and at their centre a nuclear powered US aircraft carrier."

Attacking civilians militarily is an inhumane crime that is strictly forbidden in a time of war.
The president of South Korea, Lee Myung-bak

The president of South Korea, Lee Myung-bak, lashed out at the North during a televised address.
"Only a few metres away from where shells landed, there is a school where classes were going on," he said.
"I am outraged by the ruthlessness of the North Korean regime, which is even indifferent to the lives of little children.
"Attacking civilians militarily is an inhumane crime that is strictly forbidden in a time of war.
"Now is the time to show action, not a hundred words."
Mr Lee has come under criticism for what opponents have called lapses in South Korea's response to the attack.
He has replaced his defence minister, ordered reinforcements for the 4,000 troops on Yeonpyeong and four other Yellow Sea islands and upgraded rules of engagement.
North Korea has issued a fresh threat to attack South Korea and the US, calling the allies' joint war drills yet another grave military provocation.

Meanwhile, China, the North's only major ally, has called for an emergency meeting next month with the regional powers involved in nuclear disarmament talks, including North Korea.
However, as our China correspondent Holly Williams explains: "China has shown time and time again that it's unwilling to get involved.
"That means that we are locked in the current situation and the status quo remains unchanged."
Seoul gave a cool response to Beijing's proposal, saying it should be reviewed very carefully in light of North Korea's recent revelation of a new uranium-enrichment facility.
The troubled relations between the two Koreas, which fought a three-year war in the 1950s, have steadily deteriorated since Mr Lee's conservative government took power in 2008 with a tough new policy toward the North.

190 Countries In Cancun For Climate Change Scam

'As government ministers from more than 190 countries gather today in the Mexican city of Cancun for the start of talks aimed at minimising the impact of climate change, the need for a deal could scarcely be more pressing. The stakes are high, the expectations are low.
There is scant sign of the dramatic cuts in emissions of greenhouse gases needed to stop global warming exceeding 2C and devastating vast areas of the planet.
Failure to achieve meaningful progress could seal the fate of hundreds of millions of people living in some of the poorest parts of the world and in greatest danger from rising sea levels, drought and famine.'
